The OTA Ranking Playbook for Independent Indian Hotels
Content score, parity, promotions and review velocity — the four levers that decide where your hotel appears on Booking.com, MakeMyTrip and Agoda.
The short answer
OTA ranking is not a mystery and it is not for sale. Every major platform ranks on a variation of the same four inputs: conversion, content completeness, competitiveness, and guest satisfaction. Fix those in order and an independent hotel can outrank a branded competitor with a larger marketing budget.
Lever 1 — Content completeness
The cheapest ranking gain in hospitality is a finished listing.
- 30+ high-resolution photographs, shot horizontally, room-type accurate, sequenced hero-first.
- Every amenity ticked — including the unglamorous ones (kettle, laundry, power backup, parking).
- Room descriptions written for the buyer, not the builder: what they see, hear and get.
- All room types mapped correctly to the channel manager, with occupancy and bedding accurate.
Platforms publish a content score. Anything below 95% is lost impressions.
Lever 2 — Parity and rate integrity
If the same room is cheaper on another channel — including a wholesaler leak surfacing on metasearch — the platform demotes you and the guest distrusts you. Weekly parity sweeps across every channel, rate plan and length-of-stay combination are non-negotiable. Fix the source contract, not just the visible rate.
Lever 3 — Promotions used as instruments, not panic
Genius, Preferred Partner, Assured, mobile rates and country rates all buy visibility. Used blindly, they buy it at a loss. Used well, they are switched on for shoulder dates and switched off for compression dates, with the discount modelled against the incremental impressions it earns.
A simple discipline: never run a stacked promotion on a date already forecast to sell above 80%.
Lever 4 — Review velocity and score
Score matters, but so does freshness. Ten reviews this quarter beat forty from two years ago. Build a post-stay request into checkout, respond to every review inside 48 hours, and route operational complaints back to the department that caused them. Moving 7.9 to 8.7 typically lifts OTA-sourced bookings by double digits without any rate change.
Channel-by-channel notes for India
- Booking.com — international leisure and long lead times; content score and Genius placement dominate.
- MakeMyTrip / Goibibo — domestic volume; campaign participation and price competitiveness drive placement.
- Agoda — APAC demand; aggressive with promo stacking, so watch net ADR.
- Expedia — US/EU lead volume, strong for wedding and group blocks.
- Airbnb — meaningful for boutique and villa inventory; ranking rewards response time.
The sequence that works
- Content to 100%.
- Parity clean across all channels.
- Review programme live.
- Only then, promotions and paid placement.
Running step four first is the most common and most expensive mistake in Indian hotel distribution.
