How Guest Reviews Move Your OTA Ranking (and Your Rate)
Review score is a pricing lever, not a vanity metric. What actually shifts the number, and how fast.
On Booking.com, MakeMyTrip and Agoda, review score feeds ranking, conversion and the rate the market will accept. A 0.4-point move is worth more than most promotions.
Where the score really comes from
Cleanliness, staff, and value drive the largest share of dissatisfaction in Indian properties. Value is a pricing signal: guests rate value poorly when the room did not match the price paid, which is a revenue-management problem disguised as a service one.
Volume matters as much as average
A 9.0 from 40 reviews ranks below an 8.6 from 900 on several platforms, because recency and volume are weighted. Ask every departing guest. A simple post-checkout message with a direct review link lifts response rates several times over.
Respond to everything, quickly
Respond to all reviews within 48 hours, in the language of the review. Address the specific complaint, state what changed, and avoid templates. Prospective guests read the responses more carefully than the complaints.
Fix the recurring three
Tag every negative review by theme for a quarter. Almost always three themes account for most of the damage — usually noise, bathroom condition, or breakfast. Fixing those three is cheaper than any marketing spend.
Connect score to rate
Track your score against your comp set monthly. When you close a gap, test a rate increase on high-demand dates within two weeks — ranking and conversion respond faster than most operators expect.
What not to do
Do not buy reviews, incentivise scores, or dispute honest criticism. Platforms detect it, and a penalty costs more visibility than any short-term gain.
